Europe and the world facing the crisis
Questions pertaining to the future of the euro zone, a political leadership model in the times of crisis, post-crisis economic deal and the role ofCentral Europe, have dominated the last editions of Krynica Economic Forum debates. The President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso, over his speech in Krynica pointed out that today's world is a network of vessels, which was clearly seen in the case of public finances crisis in Greece. Therefore, we need to think as Europeans, but to act globally, Barroso stressed. The Prime Minister Donald Tusk talked in Krynica about the need for deeper European integration and the continuous opening to new countries. Today from Krynica, tomorrow from Warsaw, but also from Brussels and from Strasbourg; there should be a very strong voice heard, supporting the spirits of all those who believe in the meaning of European integration, not only in the sense of the status quo, but also further integration efforts stressed the Prime Minister.

Ukrainian agriculture: opportunities and limitations
Ukraine has enormous potential for the development of agriculture productivity. This is mainly due to favorable natural conditions for agriculture: fertile soil, dominated by black dirt and a very favorable climate on the most of the country's territory. Currently, the economy of Ukraine, and especially its agriculture, is in a period of recovery after the crisis caused by problems related to the transformation process and change in the ownership structure of Ukrainian agriculture. In this context, the question arises whether the Ukrainian agriculture is able to provide soon a significant increase in agricultural production and to become an important exporter of agro-food products on a global scale. Therefore, one of the most important debates of the 6th Europe-Ukraine Forum will be dedicated to the prospects of the development of Ukrainian agriculture.

Energy topics on the Economic Forum

Energy topics have been in recent years one of the main issues discussed on the Economic Forum in Krynica. Energy policy and security, technological innovations enabling access to new resources, nuclear energy prospective or renewable sources have been a topic of many panel discussions, presentations and lectures. During the conference representatives of governments, energy companies, regulatory institutions and experts talk about the future and ways of development in the sector. The presence of the majority of Central European players proves the importance of the Forum in Krynica. The level of discussion is reflected in the influence it has on international experts and media. Last year during the Forum there was a presentation of a joint PKN ORLEN and CASE report on the influence of exploration of shell gas on Polish economy.

Forum in Budapest a decisive time for Ukraine
The 6th Europe-Ukraine Forum will take place in Budapest from 12th to 14th May, 2013, under the following motto: Ukraine-EU new approaches to confront old strategies . The conference is co-organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary and the Institute for Eastern Studies which organizes the Economic Forum in Krynica-Zdrój. The year 2013 can be groundbreaking for the EU-Ukraine relations, because one of the priorities of the Lithuanian presidency in the EU will be signing the Association Agreement during the Eastern Partnership summit in November in Vilnius. Ukraine has been negotiating the Association Agreement with the EU for several years. The Association Agreement was accepted in March 2012, but difficult political situation in Ukraine as well as lack of judicial systems reforms and electoral system that favours the ruling party postponed the signing.

New Ukrainian government big challenges, compromise of elites
In the end of the year, President Viktor Janukovytch appointed a new government, whose makeup was a consequence of a compromise between two Donetsk based groups of oligarchs: the Family, connected with the presidents son Oleksandr Janukovytch, and circles connected with the richest Ukrainian Rinat Achmetov. Mykola Azarov, not connected directly to any business group, remained in the position of prime minister. His influence was reduced though because the position of deputy prime minister was taken by Sergey Arbuzov, the main political figure in the group of "the Family". Prime ministers work will be also supervised by Olena Lukasz, a trusted person of the president, taking the function of minister for the Council of Ministers. Lukasz is not only so called minister without portfolio, but also an éminence grise in the cabinet, which will act as the eyes and ears of the president; all governments decisions will have to be approved with her signature.
